My First Vinyasa Class

This morning I attended my first yoga class at Yoga Nine in Ventnor. I have practiced Baptiste yoga before but this morning I attended the 9am Vinyasa class. My teacher was a very kind blonde woman named Beth. We quickly realized as 9 o'clock rolled around that I was the only one attending this particular class. I was thrilled about this because this meant I had a one on one practice where my teacher could hone in on my form and poses.

The studio was very clean, quiet, and peaceful. There was an alter in the front of the room with small statues and other objects which are somewhat foreign to me. Beth and I started our practice with deep breathing that we then linked to our poses for the next hour. Every pose we moved into I had her next to me or in front of me to use as a reference. The poses flowed nicely and I felt the deep breathing really helped keep me balanced and focused. Some of the poses felt a little uncomfortable at first but Beth was there to help align my hips correctly or adjust the positioning of my shoulders, which took a lot of that strain off of my body.

I went into the class hoping for a very peaceful experience both internally and externally. The environment was just that. However, I felt as though I was unable to get out of my own head. I was constantly questioning myself, "am I doing this correctly?", and trying to mirror my instructor's every move. I thought about why this was happening on my drive home. I think learning all the poses correctly and feeling confident in my form first will then allow me to turn off all the second guessing in my head. I guess that is why they say "practice makes perfect."

I was all around extremely pleased with my class today. I was welcomed into a brand new experience with open arms and was given more care and attention I could have ever asked for. I look forward to grasping the basics of yoga so I can grow my practice and find peace internally and externally.
